Follow the Beat to Morgan County

The foothills of the Appalachian Mountains are steeped in the origins of bluegrass and country music. I grew up listening to my ancestors play bluegrass and gospel as a family band. My grandpa played mandolin in this band of brothers and sisters. Each brother from his large family played an instrument and the sisters sang - each one with no formal training, only from their experiences from singing in church and listening to old time radio shows.

The music left an impression on me at a young age. My grandpa and parents took me to my first concert when I was nine years old. It was Ricky Skaggs and the Whites. That magical experience stuck with me, and I’ve been following bands and attending live concerts ever since.

There’s not a better place to watch live music than the Ohio Valley Opry at the Twin City Opera House in Morgan County. Deana and Marvin Clark host this monthly show featuring local, regional and national recording artists. Country, gospel, bluegrass and even a little rock and roll - every performance will have you tapping your foot and singing along.

Regular shows are held each January through November on the third Saturday of the month. Their Christmas show is the first Saturday in December. The OVO has been called, "the best live music show in the state of Ohio".

Even my own 15 year old son got his shot on the stage with the Clarks in the summer of 2019. Deana gave this budding young guitarist the chance of a lifetime that night surrounded by the tightest house band around. My grandpa would have been proud.

We love to share our town and our love for live performances with our guests. Visitors to the Inns at 8th & Main this past weekend came in for the Ohio Valley Opry featuring John Conlee. Yes, you heard right - Mr. Rose Colored Glasses.

But John Conlee is not the only country music royalty that has graced the stage. Anticipation is building for September’s show. Returning to the OVO stage is none other than Ricky Skaggs and Kentucky Thunder. With two shows on September 17th, these seats will go fast, so get your tickets now.

The music doesn’t stop there. Maxwells Pizza and Rooftop Patio is hosting several acoustic acts this summer as well. This open-air rooftop patio overlooking the Muskingum River is perfect for watching small, intimate shows. Have dinner and a cocktail or craft beer while enjoying the music. And if you’re that person, it’s home of the Pickle Pizza. It’s kind of a BIG DILL!

Wherever you come from, follow the beat to Morgan County and celebrate our music heritage with us. Find a show and check for overnight availability.

Let music be the reason for your next trip to the Inns. We can’t wait to host you!
