History of The Stone House

The Stone House
The "Stone House" was built by an Englishman named Serrell Richardson in 1835.  It was originally a coach stop and tavern.  The sandstone is believed to have been quarried upriver and floated down on rafts and barges.  The house was built with many outstanding architectural features that are still there today.
What a gem! I was pleasantly surprised to see the amount of work and restoration that went into this 1800’s home. The Inn at 8th and Main is truly charming. The decor is warm, inviting and the hosts are so gracious. - Alexa H.

The Stone House Today

It all started with a house. A house that is too big to house a family of today, but a home that still begs to be shared and its story told. We are part of a group of creative community doers that want to save and protect this block, and its history.

Most people think that we are nuts, but as business owners we tend to take on multiple projects at once.  Cultivating and turning this dream of luxury, overnight lodging in our community into a reality is just what we are striving to do. It is not only our dream but the perfect project for a group of local business owners like ourselves.

All the dreaming and planning in the world could not have prepared us for a back-to-back double whammy. I was diagnosed with thyroid cancer just after starting renovations on The Stone House, and COVID-19 along with shutdowns, threw us a curve ball just as we started a soft opening in the spring of 2020.

I'm now happy to report that I beat cancer, and we are doing our best to ensure our guests have a safe experience when visiting. We are fortunate to be operating in an area with a lower instance of the virus, and bookings have been steady. Our three-suite inn with private bathrooms and plenty of room to keep your distance have been attractive qualities to visitors trying to travel safely.

There has been a lot of blood, sweat, and tears, but there has also been a lot of laughter, high fives and hugs that have made this dream a reality.  There has been a lot of community involvement that has helped us see it through as well.  We couldn't have done it without a lot of help from our family, friends and fellow community business owners. Whenever possible, we have used the goods and services found right here in Morgan County.

But the work is never done. We are onto the long list of short projects. The completion of the little details seems never ending, but it's the details that make our home a boutique bed & breakfast and set us apart from other overnight accommodations.

It has been a year of renovations, a global pandemic and a personal health scare, but we have emerged as a fully functioning, traditional bed & breakfast. We hope that you join us for this ride and follow our journey on our website, blog, and social media.
