Tucked into this corner of Southeast Ohio, you’ll find art, antiques, pottery history, good food, scenic views, and the kind of small-town charm that makes a day feel full without ever feeling rushed. It is the kind of destination where you can wander a little, stop often, and truly enjoy the experience.

And when the day is done, you do not have to stay in the middle of it all to enjoy it. One of our favorite ways to experience Zanesville is to spend the day exploring, then return to McConnelsville for a quieter evening and a more restful stay.

Why Visit Zanesville, Ohio

Zanesville is one of Southeast Ohio’s most unique destinations.

Known as the Pottery Capital of the World, Zanesville stands out for its blend of renowned pottery heritage, local art, historical sites, exceptional dining, and small-town charm, all easily experienced in a single relaxing afternoon, without ever feeling crowded or rushed.

Zanesville Museum of Art & Howard Chandler Christy

One of the most meaningful connections in this region is the legacy of Howard Chandler Christy, the celebrated American artist born in McConnelsville.

The Zanesville Museum of Art is well worth a visit and often features works that reflect the area’s rich artistic history. If you appreciate American art, portraiture, or regional history, it is a stop that adds depth to your day.

And for those staying with us, there is another layer to that story.

Our local museum in McConnelsville, just a block from The Inn, also features Christy’s work. It offers a quieter, more intimate connection to the artist and to the town he once called home. For guests who enjoy learning the story behind a place, that local connection makes the experience even more special.

Pottery, History & Personal Connection

Zanesville’s pottery heritage runs deep — and it’s something that genuinely pulls us in every time.

Over the years, I’ve started collecting pieces of McCoy Pottery, and there’s just something special about holding a piece of that history in your hands. It connects you to the craftsmanship and creativity that made this region what it is today.

Once you start looking, you notice that same care and craftsmanship woven into just about everything in Zanesville.

Antiques, Shops & Local Finds

If you’re the type who loves a good dig through unexpected finds, Zanesville will not disappoint.

Check out Gemini, a downtown shop full of interesting finds, or Lucky Finds along the Route 40 corridor, where you never know what you’ll discover next.

Part of the fun is wandering without a plan. Each visit reveals something new.

Dining & Local Favorites

The food scene in Zanesville is better than most people expect — whether you’re after a proper dinner or just a good lunch spot.

  • Market Prime is one of our favorite dinner spots, known for its atmosphere and memorable meals.

  • The Downtown Exchange is perfect for lunch, offering a variety of great options in a relaxed setting.

  • Tom’s Ice Cream Bowl is a must-stop, a true local classic that has been part of the community for generations.

And then there’s one that’s a little harder to categorize — in the best way…

Muddy Misers, a restaurant set along the river with outdoor seating, where you can enjoy the view and soak in a bit of local history, including connections to Zane Grey.

For a slower pace, we also enjoy Headley Inn Winery, a perfect spot to unwind and take in the surroundings.

Scenic Views & The Historic Y-Bridge

Zanesville has a way of stopping you mid-step — there’s always something worth looking at.

One of the most iconic is the historic Y-Bridge, where you can cross the river in multiple directions. It’s one of those places that feels both unique and memorable.

Between the river, bridges, and skyline, it’s easy to see why people fall in love with this area.
